e-commerce (Electronic Commerce)
e-commerce should not be confused with e-business as is often the case. While the two have close connections with one another, they can be completely different and it is important to distinguish the difference between the two.
e-business as defined earlier is any business transacted over the internet, while e-commerce is specifically the making of financial transactions over the internet, whether they be bought or sold, sourced or marketed.
e-commerce has really taken off over the past few years with business models like amazon.com dominating the technology sector. Businesses have found that with a lower case base for marketing their services to a larger consumer base over the internet, they can pass on some of these savings to their customers. In return their product becomes more competitive over businesses with traditional costs such as shop premises, business rates and other fixed costs. The e-tailer (electronic retailer) then increase their sales and derive higher profits while the consumer has sourced their requirements cheaper and therefore have additional disposable income increasing their personal profitability.
While there are initial disadvantages with simple logistics such as time taken to distribute the product bought online, security concerns etc, the advantages greatly outweigh the perceived downside. Issues above such as distribution time and security improve day by day and are becoming more seamless and effective, - again using the internet as a powerful tool to their development.
